After the Chinese invasion in 1962 Indo Tibetan Border Police was established on 24th October 1962, as a preventive measure and to strengthen the security of the nation. A separate wing was established to provide security setup and border intelligence along the Indo Tibetan border which is around 2115 km from Karakoram Pass to Lipulekh Pass.
In the beginning, there were just 4 battalions but later it was increased and till 1978 there were nine service battalions, four speciality battalions and two training Centers.
